Javier Ortiz Rivera was born in Cayey, PR on September 7, 1984. He moved to Rochester, NY at the age of 7 along with his family. Upon graduating high school he enrolled in the US Marine early entry program. In September of 2010 Javier was deployed on his 2nd tour to Afghanistan and 4th total in his 9 years as a Marine. He achieved a rank of Staff Sergeant and Platoon Leader. On November 16, 2010 Javier was killed by an IED roadside bomb while on foot patrol in an Afghanistan province. Javier represents all of the fallen soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our Freedom. Javier, 26, was survived by his wife Veronica and three children, Alyssa, Andrew, and Anthony.
The SSGT Javier Ortiz Memorial 5K Race and Fitness Walk is sanctioned by USA Track and Field (USATF# NY12901KL). The race will start and finish at Trout Pond. For a map of the course, parking and directions visit www.prfestival.com.

Proceeds from the SSGT Javier Ortiz Memorial 5K Race and Fitness Walk will go to TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program For Survivors). Families of fallen heroes. Go to taps.org for more information. Also, Veterans Outreach Center in Rochester, New York.
NOTE: There is a processing fee of $2.50 when you register online. To avoid the fee you may register in person at 1816 Clinton Ave N.
