Runners, walkers, and supporters from across New Castle County will come together on April 23, 2026, at Abessinio Stadium for the 13th Annual Lt. Joseph Szczerba Memorial 5K, a meaningful event honoring the life and legacy of a true Salesian Gentleman and community hero.
About Lieutenant Joseph Szczerba
The race was established in memory of Lieutenant Joseph Szczerba ’85, an 18-year veteran of the New Castle County Police Department and proud Salesianum alumnus, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on September 16, 2011.
Event Purpose
- Foundation: Founded by his widow, Kathy Szczerba.
- Support: Proceeds support the Szczerba Memorial Scholarship.
- Assistance: Provides educational assistance to the children of First Responders.
- Legacy: Each step taken and mile completed helps continue Lt. Szczerba’s legacy of service, sacrifice, and commitment to others.
