John Colter Run

🏁 Race Details

• Date: September 20, 2025
• Time: 9:00 am sharp
• Location: Missouri Headwaters State Park – one mile south of Trident and about 6 miles northeast of Three Forks, MT. Take Exit 278 off I-90. Follow signs to Headwaters State Park and Trident.
• Parking: Limited: please carpool.

🛤️ The Course

• Distance: Approximately 7 miles
• Terrain: First mile and a half on paved/gravel road, remaining 5.5 miles on rugged trails.
• Crossings: Two railroad crossings: BNSF will stop ALL trains at the first crossing with a guard.
• Trail Markings: Trail marked with rock cairns, flags, stakes, skulls, bones, and beer bottles.

💦 Water Crossings

• Distance: Last ¼ mile includes two water crossings.
• First Crossing: Under the railroad bridge: mud can be knee deep.
• Second Crossing: Gallatin River: water may be waist deep.
• Safety: A safety rope will be provided across the river: bring an extra change of clothes.

• Chase the John Colter: First 50 runners who beat John will win a special prize.
• Finish Awards: Prizes for overall top male and female, age group winners, and special recognitions.
• Post-Race Festivities: Join us for a barbeque with beer and live music!
• Participants Limit: We are limited to 300 participants!

📋 Important Information

• Bib Policy: Race bibs cannot be transferred: violation affects liability and results.
• Registration: Opens April 1, 2025: reserve your spot early!
• No Refunds: Entry fees will not be refunded if you cannot run.
• Cancellation Policy: 50% refund if the race is canceled due to extraordinary reasons.

🚫 Race Rules

• Walkers: Not permitted.
• Dogs: Not allowed on the race course.
• Water Station: One approximately 4 miles into the run.
• Porta Potties: Available at the start area only.
