History of the Ellerbe Marathon

• First Race: The Ellerbe Marathon first ran in 1992.
• Origin: Its origin dates to the fall of 1991 with Mark Long and Doug Dawkins.
• First Event: The first race was held April 12, 1992, with 41 entrants and 39 finishers.
• Old School: There were no online entries, just paper forms and basic aid stations.

Enduring Tradition

• Resilience: The Ellerbe Marathon has faced many challenges and changes since 1992.
• Continuity: It is the oldest continuously held marathon in North Carolina.
• Modern Touches: We now present t-shirts before the race and provide nice pottery wine cups.
• Community Focus: We prioritize our runners and maintain an “Old School” feel.

Certified Course

• Certification: Both the Ellerbe Marathon and Half Marathon courses are USATF certified.
• Start/Finish: The start and finish will be near the Ellerbe Rescue Squad headquarters.
• Course Details: Runners will do a loop in the countryside before returning to Ellerbe.
• Map Availability: A course map is available on the race website.

2027 Event Fees

• Registration Period: All registrations include the Ultrasignup registration fee at checkout.
• Old School Deal: Oct. 1 through Oct. 10 - $60.
• Standard Fee: Oct. 11 through Dec. 31 - $75.
• Final Fee: Jan. 1 through registration closing - $85.
