🌊 Race Overview

• Experience: Take in the views and explore North Topsail Beach while running on the beach in either our Half Marathon, 10k or 5k.
• Honoring Veterans: Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission proudly presents the "Sledgehammer Race Series" in memory of Dr. E. B. Sledge.
• Mission: The mission statement of the "Sledgehammer Race Series" is: To Honor the memory of Sledgehammer and All Combat Veterans.
• Legacy: Sledge was a lifelong Marine and a beloved professor who published a memoir about his combat experiences.

📜 About Dr. E. B. Sledge

• Military Service: S. E. B. Sledge chose to volunteer for the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942: he served in the Pacific Theater.
• Rank: He reached the rank of Corporal while serving with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Division.
• Combat Experience: He was a 60mm mortarman at Peleliu and Okinawa, and he also served as a rifleman and stretcher bearer.
• Authorship: In 1981, he published his memoir, which became a reference for notable documentaries and miniseries.

🏃‍♂️ Course Information

• Course Location: Half marathon, 10k & 5k course are all on the beach.
• Cut Off Time: Half marathon cut off time is 4 hours: participants may be disqualified after this time.
• Support: Staff members will pick up anyone left on the course after the fourth hour.

T-shirts 👕

• Purchase Option: Runners can purchase a shirt instead of receiving one with registration.
• Pick Up: Your items will be available to pick up with your packet or shipped if participating virtually.
• Variety: A variety of items will be available in the race store.
