Community Roots: Mt. Salem Church grew out of a community Sunday School movement.
Historical Beginning: Before any public schools, starting in 1814 or 1815, the Brandywine Manufacturers’ Sunday School program of reading, writing, and ciphering along with Bible lessons was first conducted on the floor of a mill and then in its own building at the DuPont Powder Works.
Evolution: As public education became available, the Brandywine Manufacturer’s Sunday School evolved into four Christian congregations.
Notable Churches: In 1841, St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church (President Biden’s Church) was formed, followed by the founding of Mt. Salem Methodist Church in 1847 and Greenhill Presbyterian Church in 1851.
Historical Closure
Final Transition: In 1856, the Brandywine Manufacturers’ Sunday School closed as Christ Episcopal Church opened for its people.
Legacy: These transitions reflect the rich history and community impact of the Church and its associated educational programs.
Continued Engagement: Join us as we celebrate this legacy through a community-focused 5K event.
