Yellowstone Gateway 30K Overview
Yellowstone Gateway 30K runners will know why “Yellowstone is more Valuable than Gold”!
General Description
- Distance: This race spans just over 18 miles, climbs 2,609 ft, and descends 2,366 ft.
- Start Location: The race starts at the 2024 MICHELIN Guide awarded Sage Lodge trails.
- Course Conditions: Participants traverse a mix of trails, gravel roads, USFS dirt roads, and scree-covered jeep paths.
- Scenery: The course offers stunning views of Emigrant Peak and the Snowy Block Mountains of the Western Beartooths.
Details
- Historical Significance: The race takes you past the historic Yellowstone City gold settlement (c. 1864-1866).
- Water Crossings: Participants will get their feet wet crossing Emigrant Creek and the East Fork of Emigrant Creek.
- Elevation: The elevation varies from 4,966 feet at the start to 7,618 feet at the top aid station.
- Finish Line: The race ends at the renowned Chico Hot Springs Resort.
Packet Pick-Up
- Early Packet Pickup: Timing and location will be announced as race day approaches.
- Race Day: Sunday (9/21) from 7:30 AM-8:45 AM at Sage Lodge Mud Room.
Aid Stations
- Old Chico Aid Station: 3.8 miles from the start.
- Emigrant Gulch Aid Station: 7.0 miles.
- St. Julian turnaround: 10 miles. Cutoff time 12:45 pm.
- Old Chico Aid Station: 16.0 miles. Cutoff time 2:35 pm.
Safety Considerations
- Hazardous Terrain: Running downhill on steep rocky slopes can increase the risk of falls.
- Water Crossings: Emigrant Creek is ankle to shin deep at the crossing.
- Weather Variability: Prepare for cold and snowy or hot and dry conditions.
- Course Monitoring: Park County Search and Rescue Volunteers will be available for assistance.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
- Cupless Race: Participants must bring their own cup/water bottle/hydration pack.
- Reducing Waste: Happy Trash Can will assist in composting during the post-race picnic.
Course Markings
The course will be well marked with flags, cones, and paint, with volunteers stationed at critical junctions.
Shoes, Terrain, and Equipment
- Recommended Footwear: Trail shoes are best for the rocky and uneven terrain.
- Poles: While not required, poles can aid on steep sections and water crossings.
Bear Safety
Although not required, carrying bear spray is advisable, especially in less frequented areas of the course.
Parking and Shuttle Services
- Parking Limitations: Limited parking at Sage Lodge: consider using the shuttle service.
- Shuttle Schedule: Shuttles will depart from the Field of Dreams Parking area at various times.
Drop Bag Transport
Participants are encouraged to bring a bag to drop at the start. Clearly label with your name and phone number.
Prizes
- All Participants: Each runner will receive a Yellowstone Gateway 30K hat.
- Awards: Top three male and female finishers, the first male and female masters, and age group winners.
Support and Spectating
Spectators can cheer at various locations along the course, but are advised not to drive vehicles into the gulch.
Opting Out
If you decide not to run after picking up your packet, please inform a volunteer or race director. If you drop out during the race, notify a volunteer.
Post-Race Activities
Runners can relax at Chico Hot Springs with provided lunch and beer. All finishers and volunteers receive a free swim pass.
History of the Area
This area has a long and fascinating history, including indigenous peoples and hard rock mining. The community successfully fought against a proposed gold mine to protect the land.
