Event History

• Initiated: Run with Carl was initiated in 1995 by the Schillig family with the Bettendorf Jaycees as the title sponsor.
• Title Sponsors: In 2005, Bettendorf Rotary became the run title sponsor: Ascentra Credit Union took over in 2016.
• Support for Education: For the first 20 years, Run with Carl provided financial support for the Carl D. Schillig Scholarship fund.
• New Foundations: In 2014, the Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation and Pleasant Valley Educational Foundation joined to fund scholarships and educational opportunities.

Current Status

• Annual Event: The annual Labor Day Run with Carl is now in its 32nd year.
• Scholarship Fund: The event continues to support scholarship funds for local high school students.
• Legacy: The Schillig family achieved its goal of creating an endowment to sustain future scholarships.

About Carl Schillig

• Tragic History: Carl Schillig was 15 years old when he was killed in a car-pedestrian accident on Sept. 17, 1994.
• Community Participation: Carl was active in various community, school, and church activities.
• Memorial Fund: His family established the memorial fund to provide college scholarships to high school graduates.
• Impact: The fund honors Carl's spirit through educational support for future generations.

Carl D. Schillig Memorial Scholarship

• Annual Award: A scholarship is awarded each year to students from Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley High Schools.
• Eligibility: Students must have at least a 2.3 grade point average.
• Spirit of Participation: Scholarships are given to those who exemplify Carl's spirit through school, sports, and community involvement.
• Ongoing Support: The scholarship continues to encourage youth to engage actively in their communities.
