Historical Background
- Ownership: The Brown Family or their caretakers owned Valley Lodge for 181 years until 1973.
- Founders: Brothers David and Ephraim Brown came to Flintstown (now Baldwin) with their father, Captain David Brown, from Concord, Massachusetts, in 1783.
- Architecture: Ephraim built Valley Lodge, while his brother David built Saddle Back Farm (now gone) above Valley Lodge.
- Family Legacy: Ephraim's seven children all lived to be adults, leading him to expand the original cape with a Federal Colonial structure.
Architectural Features
- Historical Evolution: The mantels showcase the evolution of architectural styles from pre-revolutionary to the late Victorian periods.
- Preservation: 95% of the original features are still present, offering a unique glimpse into the past.
- Recognition: Valley Lodge was featured in the April 2011 issue of Early American Life: a copy is available at the Brown Memorial Library.
- Accessibility: Take Brown Road behind Limington Lumber on RT 113, then take the first right onto E. Saddleback—Valley Lodge is the first house.
