Historical Background
- Ownership: The Brown Family or their caretakers owned Valley Lodge for 181 years until 1973.
- Founding: Brothers David and Ephraim Brown arrived in Flintstown (now Baldwin) from Concord, Massachusetts, in 1783.
- Contribution: Captain David Brown helped lay out the plot plan and worked on the roads in Flintstown.
- Construction: Ephraim Brown built Valley Lodge, while his brother David built Saddle Back Farm above it.
Architectural Features
- Family Legacy: Ephraim had seven children who lived to adulthood, leading to expanded structures.
- Evolution: In the early 1800s, a Federal Colonial was added to the original cape without disturbing its early features.
- Styles: The architecture reflects styles from pre-revolutionary to late Victorian periods.
- Preservation: 95% of the original features are still present, visible from the mantels.
Tour Details
- Publication: Valley Lodge was featured in the April 2011 issue of Early American Life: a copy is available at the Brown Memorial Library.
- Directions: Take Brown Road behind Limington Lumber on RT 113, then first right onto E. Saddleback. Valley Lodge is the first house.
- Cost: No charge for the tour: a $5 registration fee will be donated to the Baldwin Historical Society.
- Pre-registration: Required due to spacing and safety issues: extra sessions will be available as needed.
