Background: This memorial race is held in memory of Joe Mike Baker, who lived and worked in the Sandy Bottom Community.
Interests: Joe Mike had many hobbies such as bowling, hunting, fishing, and sports: however, he fell in love with running.
Tragic Loss: At the time of his accidental death in September 2014, he was training for his first half marathon.
Legacy: Family and friends organized the JMB Memorial 5K and Fun Run to raise money for scholarships for high school seniors who aspire to give back to their community just as Joe Mike did.
Event Impact
Scholarships Awarded: Since 2016, the JMB Memorial 5K and Fun Run has awarded more than $34,000.00 in scholarships.
Students Supported: A total of 37 South Lenoir High School students have benefited from these scholarships.
Community Effort: The event is made possible through the generous donations of sponsors and the commitment of runners and volunteers.
Participation: The community is encouraged to come out, run, walk, or volunteer as a way to honor Joe Mike.

Top Male &: Female: Awards will be presented to the top male and female in each age group.
Age Groups: Awards will be for ages 13 & under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+.
