Background Story
The Tiny Footprints Remembrance 5K was born out of loss. In May of 2023, Katie and Steve Harrington unexpectedly and tragically lost one of their twin babies, Piper, in utero at 31 weeks. Katie was placed on constant monitoring and bed rest until their survivor, Juniper, was safely delivered 10 days following and spent 29 days in the NICU.
A Message from Katie
This pain was and is incomprehensible, and no parent should ever have to go through it. Sadly, the rates of miscarriages, neonatal loss, and infant loss are higher than most think, and it’s something that isn’t often talked about, as grieving, especially grieving a child, is a taboo subject in our culture. When we were going through this nightmare, it helped to have the support of individuals who had similar experiences, as well as support from the staff at the hospital, both in labor and delivery and in the NICU. The goal with this race is to honor our daughter and the other babies who never got to come earthside, and those who left earth far too soon.
- Proceeds: Funds will support the Tiny Footprints Remembrance Foundation.
- Beneficiaries: Proceeds will benefit the Covenant NICU and the bereavement program called Noah's Footprints.
- Community Support: Helps create mementos for grieving parents and “care kits” for mothers going through miscarriages.
- Awareness: Aims to erase the stigma of grieving and provide a safe space for parents and loved ones.
Thank you so much for joining and supporting us.
