About this race
The Black Mountain Marathon & Mount Mitchell Challenge first ran in 1998, and the 2027 race will be its 28th running. Over nearly three decades it has become one of the Southeast’s best-known mountain trail races, drawing runners from across the country to climb from the town of Black Mountain, the quaint front porch of Western North Carolina, to the rooftop of Western North Carolina, the 6,684' summit of Mount Mitchell - eastern America's highest point.
The event includes two races that start together at 7:00 AM on Cherry Street in downtown Black Mountain and finish at Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain:
Mount Mitchell Challenge: ~36 miles, ~4,500 ft elevation gain, out and back to the summit of Mount Mitchell
Black Mountain Marathon: ~26 miles, ~3,000 ft elevation gain, turning around at the Blue Ridge Parkway (mile 13.1)
