About this race
Race Overview
Join us for the Grin 2 B 5K Charlie Dunn on September 26, 2026, at 586 Morris Majestic Road, Morris, AL. This race is dedicated to sharing Charlie's inspiring story.
Charlie's Story
Charlie was born full-term in August 2011. The only thing noted during the pregnancy was very little movement, but he was born without complications. Those first couple of days were rough as is typical of the newborn period - fussiness, little sleep, and figuring out feedings. Soon we settled into our new routine.
Early Development
- Observation: We noticed that he was not raising his head nor trying to roll over.
- Concerns: Our pediatrician tried to reassure us that all children were different, but I felt something was not going as it was supposed to.
- Emotional Journey: I remember tearing up at work and realizing something was wrong.
- Intervention: I quickly found a pediatrician that listened and contacted Early Intervention for help.
Diagnosis and Support
Charlie started Early Intervention around 5 months with a wonderful soul, Ashley Dees. Charlie was not meeting milestones, and despite countless tests, we did not have a diagnosis until Dr. Amelia Sutton helped us in April 2014.
- Diagnosis: We received a diagnosis of GRIN2B neuro developmental disorder.
- Research: Charlie was enrolled in a study, and we learned that this diagnosis was responsible for his developmental delay.
- Community Building: I started the GRIN2B Parent Support Group, which connected families worldwide.
- Foundation: In 2017, families established the GRIN2B Foundation.
Charlie's Life Today
Charlie is now 13 and is in total care: he eats pureed foods, travels by wheelchair, and requires assistance with most tasks. However, these differences do not define him.
- Personality: He has an engaging laugh and is known for his awesome yoga moves.
- Favorites: He loves all things water and gross body noises.
- Family: Charlie loves his family, with his big brother being his hero and his affection for Mama Breanna.
- Life Lessons: He has taught us unconditional love, celebrating every accomplishment, and the importance of friends and family.
